Room Environment
A safe, clean, comfortable and attractive classroom can stimulate learning and help build a classroom community.
BUT…setting up the classroom can be VERY daunting!
LOOK AT YOUR FLOOR PLAN
- Room dividers should be low so that all areas are visible to you.
- Areas that invite group work should not be next to quiet areas where students read or study independently.
- Art or other messy areas are best located near a sink.
- You should always be able to make eye contact with all students.
- Materials should be organized with easy access.
- Classrooms should be clean, organized, orderly, and have adequate space for instruction.
DRESS UP THE WALLS
- Classroom bulletin boards should reflect student work. Don’t forget the Writing, Math, Science, and ELD boards.
- Clues/Problems/Wonderings Board should be up to date and visible to all students.
- Question/Concept Board should be up to date and accessible to all students.
- Comprehension Strategies should be up and visible to all students.
- Alphabet Sound/Spelling Cards should be posted and used.
- Word Wall should be visible. Word Walls could be for HFW or Vocabulary (All Subject Areas)
ORGANIZING YOUR CLASSROOM
- Try to create a READING AREA, LISTENING AREA, WRITING AREA, COMPUTER AREA, and MATH AREA.
