At the beginning of the school year it is important to begin with the basics of writing. Reviewing and requiring basic sentence structure is a surefire way to start the year off on the “Write” foot. The grade level does not matter, students always need sentence structure support and reinforcement. Providing visual charts in the classroom, as well as individual copies are one way to review, reteach and recharge your students. Try creating a parts of speech classroom chart for your sentence diagramming adventure.

- Create a table with 6 column heading
- Label each column with 5 parts of speech, .
- Teacher discusses definition of each part of speech or prompts students to provide definition and/or characteristics.
- As you discuss each column, have students provide example for each column. Teacher lists examples on chart. Students can also write information on personal or individual chart.
- When talking through the chart, do so in the following order
- Noun
- Adjective
- Articles
- Verb
- Adverb
- Prepositional Phrases
- After there are 3-5 examples in each column, have students come to the front of the class and develop sentences, orally
- Lastly, have students write sentences. Be sure to let them know this is the norm. “The expectation is that each time you write, you use and create descriptive sentences that use the parts of speech.
- Review daily until, sentence creation is done correctly and effortlessly.
Scaffolds and modification
- Use a different color for each part of speech
- For K-1, begin with adjectives, noun verbs only. After mastery add the other parts of speech.

2) Have students transfer sentences onto paper, complete with punctuation.
